Frequently Asked Questions About Obtaining A California Real Estate Salesperson’s License

How old do you have to be to get a California real estate license?
You must be 18 years of age or older.

Do you have to be a citizen of the United Sates or have a green card to be able to get a real estate sales license test in the state of California?
You do not have to be a citizen of the United States nor have a green card in order to take the state test, but you cannot get the license without being a citizen or have a green card or be legally here.

What are the specific things that I have to do to be able to take the California salesperson real estate test?
Step 1 - Successfully complete the required pre-license courses to qualify for state salesperson examination.
Step 2 - Complete the Department of Real Estate (DRE) Salesperson Examination Application (RE400A*) and submit with appropriate fee and Course Completion Certificate to the DRE. The DRE will notify you of your examination date, time and location. This takes approximately 4 weeks.
Step 3 - Once you are notified of the date/time of exam begin studying practice questions for DRE exam. These are included when you purchase our Pre-License Package.
Step 4 - Successfully Pass the DRE State Examination (a score of 70% or better is required).
Step 5 - Complete Salesperson License Application (RE 202,205*) and submit to DRE with proof of residency and appropriate fees.
Step 6 - Receive Salesperson License from DRE. Allow 4-6 weeks.

Note: Real Estate Pre-License requirements are changing on October 1, 2007

Starting on October 1, 2007, an applicant for the real estate salesperson examination must show proof of three courses prior to the state exam. Real Estate Principles, Real Estate Practice, and one other course from a designated list will be required.

Prior to October 1, 2007, you will only need California Real Estate Principles, to qualify for a salesperson license.

We have two Pre-License packages for changing qualifications.

Lyon Real Estate will refund the cost of the Pre-License Package (whichever amount you paid) upon the closing of your first escrow as a Lyon agent.

What are the approximate costs involved in obtaining a real estate license?
Only $260 plus $10.00 S/H. Lyon will reimburse your full tuition when you close your first escrow as a Lyon Agent!

DRE Salesperson Application fee…$245**
Department of Justice fingerprint fee...$56**

Are there other costs involved in beginning my real estate career?
Yes. Among others there are the local, state and national real estate association and Multiple Listing Service fees. To determine these fees call:
